What is connection parenting?
Let’s dive into the world of connection parenting – the secret code to nurturing your kiddo’s heart. It’s like the parenting equivalent of being a stealthy warrior, but with way more snuggles and a sidekick who never fails to surprise you with their creative messes. So, grab your favorite caffeinated beverage (we’re gonna need it!) and let’s talk about connection parenting, which includes gentle parenting, responsive parenting, and conscious parenting.
Picture this: connection parenting is like a big warm hug for your kiddo’s heart. It’s all about building a deep, loving, and respectful bond with your kids. It’s not about control or manipulation, but rather about understanding, empathizing, and nurturing their unique spirit. Ever heard something like, ‘don’t put out their fire, help them learn to control it”? That is the idea.

Communication is Key:
You know those secret decoder rings we wished we had as kids? Well, connection parenting is like having a direct line to your kiddo’s heart. It’s about fostering open and honest communication, even with our tiniest humans. It’s like being fluent in a language made up of babbles, cries, and hilarious stories that start with “So, I was playing with the dog and accidentally wore its tail as a hat.” Our job is to listen, decode, and respond with the appropriate level of enthusiasm and parental guidance.
POT (parents of teens) alert: this will often happen right before you are ready to go to bed. There is nothing that inspires my teens to talk more than me getting up to turn out the lights and go to bed. I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything.
Be a Listening Ninja. For example, your kiddo is sharing their latest masterpiece, a crayon masterpiece on the living room wall. Instead of freaking out, take a deep breath and listen. Connection parenting teaches us to be listening ninjas, honing our superpower of attentiveness. By truly hearing our kiddos, we create a safe space where they feel heard, valued, and understood. Plus, it’s an opportunity to whip out those art supplies and redirect their artistic talents to paper!
Connection Through Play:
Who says play is just for kids? In connection parenting, we become play experts too! Dive into their imaginative world of tea parties, dinosaur stomping, or superhero adventures. It’s like being a kid again, but with a side of responsible adulting. So, put on your superhero cape (figuratively or literally) and make some golden memories.
Dive into their imaginative worlds and let them lead. For some of you this will be more of a challenge and that’s ok. Find a way to connect through play – board games, video games, movies, or activities are also great ways to connect. Remember you are the grown up with the killer snack stash. Let the laughter flow and embrace the joy of the moments.
Embracing Emotions:
Emotions can be like rollercoasters on steroids. But in all the forms of connection parenting, we don’t shy away from them. We embrace the meltdowns, the tantrums, and even our own moments of frustration. It’s about teaching our kiddos that it’s okay to feel all the feels and that we’re there to help them navigate those emotions.
From the epic meltdowns over mismatched socks to the inexplicable tears because the cookie broke in half, we’re there to empathize, validate, and offer solutions that rival Einstein’s theories. Who knew finding the perfect cookie shape could be so challenging? Take a deep breath, channel your inner calm, and reassure them that you are there. If these things are triggering for you and you find it really hard to stay calm, a coach can be a beautiful support.
Respect and Empathy:
In connection parenting, respect and empathy are the golden rules. We treat our kiddos with the same respect we’d give to our BFF (minus the secret-sharing, of course). We acknowledge their feelings, validate their experiences, and show them that their emotions matter. By modeling empathy, we’re nurturing little hearts that will grow into compassionate adults.
In connection parenting, respect and empathy are the magical ingredients to a thriving parent-child relationship. We treat our mini-humans with the same respect we give to the adults in our lives. We acknowledge their emotions, validate their experiences, and show them that we’re on their team. It’s like having a secret handshake that says, “I get you, kiddo, even when the world doesn’t.”
Connection Beyond Discipline:
Let’s debunk the myth that discipline and connection are mortal enemies. In connection parenting, discipline is all about guiding with finesse and stealth agility. We set limits with love and understanding, redirecting their energies and helping them make better choices. And yes, sometimes we end up in a “why” loop that feels like a scene from a cosmic comedy. But hey, at least we can laugh about it later.
You are probably already connection parenting.
Most of the parents I know are already on this connection parenting adventure. Remember, it’s a journey filled with laughter, love, and the occasional mess that could rival an art installation. Enjoy the ride, because these moments are the ones that shape not only our little ones but also the incredible parents we become along the way.
